National postal strike threat to Christmas deliveries

Christmas deliveries could be hit by the first national postal strike for four years.

The Communication Workers Union yesterday announced plans to ballot 125,000 Royal Mail workers for action later this month.

It could result in strike action on October 10, at the earliest, with a series of stoppages threatening to impact on the key Christmas period.

The dispute centres on pay, changes to the workers’ pension scheme and the impact of the proposed privatisation of the postal giant.
