Video: California neighborhood’s community mailbox stolen in the middle of the night

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A woman in far west Bakersfield says her neighborhood’s community mailbox was stolen early Saturday morning.

Kim Davis told 23ABC she heard a crash outside her home around 3:30 a.m. A neighbor stopped by later in the morning to tell her a community mailbox had been stolen.

“People have stolen our mail before,” Davis said, “I don’t know if it’s because we’re in a rural area, but it’s not right. It’s not fair to us. We need our mail just like everybody else.”

Davis lives in an area off Highway 58 on Bussell Road. She said the missing mailbox served approximately 15 homes. Nuts and bolts were left on an empty cement patch next to a second, identical box.

Well, if you pick your mail up daily, there will be nothing to steal?

And the post office wants more of these instead of door to door service.

It seems to me there is an easy, low cost solution to this problem. Put a GPS unit inside each NBU. If it’s moved from its location the unit activates and law enforcement can track its movement and arrest the thief.
