Video: Iowa Postal Workers Protesting Proposed Changes
Postal workers rallied Thursday night in Des Moines to protest two bills in Congress and set the record straight about their profitability.
Postal workers said Congress wants to cut the wrong portion of the postal service budget.
Protesters said unfair rules on retiree healthcare funding are to blame for postal shortfalls. Cutting back on deliveries will only make things worse, protesters argued.
Congress passed a law in 2006 that requires the Post Office to pre-fund retiree healthcare benefits for 75 years in the future. Each year the Post Office pays $5.5 billion into the fund.
