Video: High rent forces post office move in Iowa City

Officials with the U.S. Postal Service said Wednesday preliminary steps to relocate Iowa City’s main post office location are underway.

During a public meeting at City Hall, 410 E. Washington St., officials with the USPS said that because of the high rent that comes with the near-downtown post office space, officials are looking at options to move.

Rent for the federally owned Iowa City Federal Building at 400 S. Clinton St. is $700,000 a year and the Iowa City Post Office is paying too much for space it doesn’t need, said Angela Kuhl, real estate specialist with the regional Office of Postal Service in Denver.
