As former Hurricane Sandy drifted inland yesterday, the destruction it left behind resulted in the closing of numerous post offices and mail processing facilities. The USPS Mail Service Update listed ten major processing plants in the New York metropolitan area that were without power. All post offices on Long Island were closed, as were many in New Jersey. Scattered power outages and service suspensions extended from Massachusetts to Virginia.
On the plus side, the three processing plants that serve the Philadelphia area were up and running, and the Mail Transportation Equipment Service Centers expected to be back in business today.
