Canada Post tables new offer to employees legislated back to work over a year ago

With arbitration stalled and no sign of a new contract any time soon, Canada Post took the unusual step Thursday of tabling a revised offer to postal employees who were legislated back to work more than a year ago.

Canada Post says while its mail volumes were already in steep decline a year ago, the pace has worsened in 2012. It estimates that it’s delivering 1.4 million fewer items a day this year compared with a year earlier.“The financial situation facing the company has become more dire,” said Canada Post spokesman Jon Hamilton. “We told them that we’re at a situation of what we could offer a year ago is not what we could offer today.”
