South Australia’s flagship postal superstore opens in Adelaide

South Australia’s flagship postal “superstore” will open in Adelaide following a major $1 million transformation to cater for a boom in online shopping and changing consumer habits in the digital era.

In a significant departure from the traditional postal outlet, a distinctive feature of the new Rundle Mall superstore is its combination of self-service options, online shopping tools and personalised service.

The superstore features 12 counters tailored to different customer requirements and a digital essentials zone in-store to allow customers to shop online via iMacs and iPads.

Self-service options are available for visitors in a hurry while personal service is provided for specialised transactions. The superstore also features a dedicated seating area where customers can complete more complex financial and identity services transactions.

The Rundle Mall superstore, which transforms South Australia’s busiest post office, will have dedicated 24/7 parcel lockers for post office box holders. In coming months, smart parcel lockers will be installed in the CBD so all Adelaide residents can pick up their parcels any time of the day or night.

With 90 per cent of Australians applying for or renewing their passport at a post office, the superstore is designed to satisfy customers’ complete travel needs under the one roof. Travel insurance and travel merchandise is available in-store, as is a Travelex currency exchange outlet for customers to obtain their foreign currency.

The opening of the Rundle Mall superstore coincides with the transformation of two other superstores in Mt Gambier and Oaklands Park, representing a total investment in South Australia of $1.7 million.

Australia Post Regional Manager for Retail Services in SA, Paul Lecher, said the design of the superstores in Rundle Mall, Mt Gambier and Oaklands Park took into account the changes in customers’ needs as well as the growing range of services now offered at postal outlets.

“The Rundle Mall store serves 1200 to 1500 customers each day and we know our customers are busier than ever and don’t have time to wait in a queue. By providing self-service terminals in the superstore, customers can skip the queue and get back to their daily demands.

“To bridge the divide between physical and online shopping, the iMacs and iPads in-store also allow customers to shop or research online and navigate key products and services.

“Yet in this digital era where postal outlets now offer so much more than mail delivery, personal service will continue to be so important for many of our more complex and specialised transactions.”

The Adelaide superstore comes after the iconic Brisbane GPO opened as the nation’s first superstore in November and is one of 30 to be operating across Australia by August this year.

The Rundle Mall Post Office is located at Shop 59, Level 1 City Cross Shopping Centre, 33-39 Rundle Mall.
