Sanders Calls Postal Service Plan ‘Deeply Flawed’

WASHINGTON, Feb. 22 – Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) issued the following statement today on a consolidation plan announced by the U.S. Postal Service:

“The plan announced today by the U.S. Postal Service is deeply flawed and Congress must change it. I expect comprehensive postal reform legislation to be on the floor of the Senate within the next few weeks.

“At a time when the Postal Service is competing against the instantaneous delivery of information from email and the Internet, slowing down mail delivery service will result in less business and less revenue, and will bring about a death spiral for this institution which is so vitally important for all Americans.

“A critical weakness of the current Postal Service plan is that it ignores the onerous financial burden being placed on the Postal Service by $5.5 billion a year in pre-payments for future retiree health benefits. According to the Postal Service inspector general, those payments are no longer necessary because of the $45 billion which that account already has accumulated.

“The Postal Service needs to be reformed not by massive cuts, but by a new entrepreneurial business model which expands the products and services the post office can sell in the 21st century digital age.”

i think the post office should cut jobs, but they are starting from the wrong end, cut out the fat cats at the top that doo nothing except get paid big money to figure out how to save a dollar.

Bob Komar SAYS “postal mgmt DEEPLY FLAWED’ no LEADERSHIP or DIRECTION..when will ALL you KLOWNS REALIZE…mgmt MADE ALL THE DECISIONS AND POLICIES THAT GOVERN THE CRAFT! and the way we do business….and we get the BLAME.. CUT OFFICES .. CUT CRAFT NUMBERS.. the real answer is FIRE ALL THE DOPES IN CHARGE and HIRE REAL,REAL BUSINESS PEOPLE!

bob and mark, we need to start cutting jobs in congress. we need to get their hands out of our pockets, not only do they steal from the american public in order to enrich themselves and their paying sponsors, they steal from the USPS. USPS is nothing more than a cash cow and they won’t get off the teats until they’ve killed it and/or find a way to sell it to their sponsors for yet another fix of wealth….

  • Karen Ardoin

We need very good IT people and people with business degrees to be hired at the USPS and all the non-qualified people in charge to be let go. Surely there are plenty of qualified people who have lost jobs out there who would be glad to reinvent the USPS!

  • Tim Manning

Thank God for people like Bernie Sanders! At least there is one person in Congress that is thinking! What Congress took from the USPS, they have to give it back! Stop running from it Republicans!!

  • David

Yes, from any objective point of view, USPS IT systems are pretty lousy. Unwieldy, bulky and unreliable scanners that don’t download in real time would be one place to start.
