VA Rep. Connolly Offers Proposal To Help USPS

Va. Rep. Gerry Connolly Offers Proposal To Help The US Postal Service Battle Deficit: MyFoxDC.com

"We’re being presented with false choices," said Rep. Gerry Connolly (D – Virginia).

Connolly believes Congress should roll back its mandate, imposed in 2006, that requires USPS to pre-pay 100 percent of its anticipated retirement costs.

"No other federal entity is required to pre-fund at 100 percent," he said. "The Government Accountability Office says that costs an extra $5 billion a year."

There are many reasons for the postal decline. The one that should always be mentioned is that there are still too many in management with much too much downtime.Too many suspect jobs were given in the past to “friends” and when the current problems hit the house of cards fell and the chickens came home to roost.

The american people have to do whatever they have to, to save the USPS. The USPS should be allowed to open a Starbucks or even a McDonalds inside it’s own buildings if it needs to to survive. They should also try harder to go after some of FedEx and UPS small packages and ask alot of these on line stores to offer USPS shipping. I for one do not want the USPS to go away. They give towns their own Idenity and provide a much needed service.

They talk about the 30% unemployment rate for Vets and all the people that will be coming back and will need jobs. The Postal service is one of the biggest employers of Vets. The police and fire departments also were a big employer of vets. Now we are laying off police and fireman and teachers. The Postal service is down about250, 000 people and if they go to a five (5) day delivery and keep closing plants they will lose another 200,000 jobs! Soon there won’t be any middleclass jobs .
