Postal worker seriously injured while delivering mail in Michigan

WEXFORD COUNTY, MI. On Thursday, September 23, 2021, at approximately 3:18 p.m. a trooper and motor carrier officer from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Cadillac Post were dispatched to M-115 near S Mackinaw Trail for a two-vehicle crash in Clam Lake Township. The investigation revealed a semi-truck driven by a 60-year-old Hersey man was traveling SE on M-115. A United States Postal Service (USPS) truck driven by 55-year-old Leah Marie Tibbs from McBain was also headed SE on M-115 traveling on the shoulder.

Surveillance footage shows Tibbs attempted a U-turn on M-115 and pulled out in front of the semi-truck. Both vehicles caught fire. The trooper and motor carrier officer began life saving efforts before being relieved by EMS personnel.

The 60-year-old Hersey man was taken to Munson Hospital in Cadillac and later released. Tibbs was taken to Munson Hospital in Cadillac and later airlifted to Munson Traverse City. A previous news release indicated Tibbs had passed, however this information was released in error, and she remains in critical condition at Munson Traverse City. The crash remains under investigation.
