Small shippers are facing headaches at the post office

From the Wall Street Journal Logistics report:

Digital marketplace eBay is looking for alternatives to the U.S. Postal Service as heavy online demand taxes parcel networks, the WSJ Logistics Report’s Jennifer Smith writes, part of the upheaval in U.S. distribution channels triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.

In recent months online sellers say some packages shipped through the Postal Service are taking days or even weeks to arrive and some shipments can’t be tracked. The difficulties are complicating business for small operators who rely on the USPS to ship packages at affordable rates and don’t have the scale to negotiate discounted rates with United Parcel Service and FedEx.

The private carriers have also wrestled with service delays this year and they along with the Postal Service are seeing improvements. But for smaller shippers, the strains on delivery remain a concern as they head toward the make-or-break fourth quarter.
