This month, the Office of Personnel Management laid out some major changes to the benefits that federal employees receive. This proposal includes some major cuts to pensions and retirement plans. Jessica Klement, Staff Vice President for advocacy at the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, says that the worker reaction to these modifications is mixed to negative.
“You enter civil service, you are provided with a benefits package. Many federal employees view that as a contract, ‘This is what I get in return for my services,’” said Klement.
“So, changing that now does seem like a violation of that contract. The White House has proposed a number of things which leave enough ambiguity that Congress could implement them prospectively, they could implement them immediately.”
