Yonkers mail thefts: $660K stolen from 85 victims; postal service ‘failed,’ mayor says

YONKERS – About $660,000 has been stolen from 85 victims of mail theft in Yonkers, reflecting a widespread problem that city officials are growing increasingly frustrated with.

“Since the age of the Pony Express we have been able to trust the government in running the Postal Service. It’s not happening anymore. We can’t trust it,” Maryann DeRosa said at a city press conference today in Yonkers. “Something that was sacred is no longer.”

DeRosa spoke on behalf of residents of Sunnyside Manor, an apartment building on Sunnyside Drive where she said people have had problems with mail they deposit in the building’s indoor, outgoing mailbox.
