Burning home day care evacuates safely, thanks to mail carrier

From the Circleville, Ohio Herald:

DARBY TOWNSHIP — Eight children attending a daycare/preschool and two adults managed to escape a house fire Monday morning after being alerted by a mail carrier.

The fire swept through 10496 U.S. Highway 62, just north of Creamer Road in Darby Township around 10:54 a.m. Wednesday.

“My wife and I were in the house when the mail carrier knocked on our front door and told us that our garage was on fire,” said Billy Hunt.

Hunt and his wife, Janice, own the house and operate a daycare/preschool where eight children, ages 2 to 5, were attending Wednesday. Just as they’d practiced fire drills before, Billy Hunt said they gathered the children and exited out of the front of the house safely.

The children were taken to the nearby Southwest Church of the Nazarene. Billy Hunt said when he went to the back of the house where the garage was located, the fire had already spread to the back of the house.
