If you are confined to a wheel chair you will not be able to get into the Xenia post office.
“The bottom line right now is that there is now accessibility,” said Jim Quirk.
Quirk is working to get access for everyone to the building.
“I’m sure there’s more people out there, there has to be, who have experienced this either at the post office or a library or wherever but there’s a lot of individuals out there who do not want to pay to accommodate the disabled. We have a fair right to the enjoyment of our surroundings,” said Quirk.
So why hasn’t the post office built a ramp to allow access to anyone not able to walk without assistance?
It’s all because of the Architectural Barriers Act of 1968.
The act says any building built after 1968 must accommodate people with disabilities.
“It (the post office building) predates the law and therefore there is no legal requirement for us to modify the building to meet modern accessibility standards,” said Walton.
