ABBYVILLE – The U.S. Postal Service has temporarily suspended service at the Abbyville post office, 108 N. Main St., pending repairs to the building.

Abbyville patrons received notice Monday that beginning Tuesday, customers who receive post office box delivery through the Abbyville post office may obtain their mail at the Arlington post office, about eight miles from Abbyville.

“The safety of our employees and customers is our top concern,” said Post Office Operations Manager Mike Monnington in a written announcement. “So we have temporarily suspended operations and notified the landlord so repairs can be made. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our customers, and we will keep them updated on any changes and progress.”

Husband and wife Toss and Phyllis Bachus own the building in Abbyville leased to USPS. According to the Reno County appraiser’s website, the building was built in 1930. The county appraised the land and building at under $15,000. USPS has “rented it from us for many years,” Phyllis Bachus said.
