Feds investigating theft of Dayton mail by postal contractor

An unnamed truck driver is being investigated in connection with the theft of mail she was contracted to take from the Dayton Post Office to Postal Service operations in Pittsburgh.

The suspect is an independent contractor with Rose-marie Zajac’s Mail Transportation Co. of Yatesboro.

Zajac said the driver has been suspended during the investigation.

“I was definitely surprised when I found out an investigation was going on,” Zajac said. “The Postal Service’s law enforcement will take care of the situation. Any final decision on this driver depends on the outcome of the investigation.”

The investigation was prompted by 15 complaints of missing mail originating at the Dayton Post Office since March, said Scott Balfour, special agent with the Postal Service Office of the Inspector General.
