APWU: The Senate Can Help Stop Service Cuts and Plant Closures

From the American Postal Workers Union:

apwulogo08/05/2014A move by the USPS that will slow America’s mail service and that threatens tens of thousands of jobs requires an urgent response, said APWU President Mark Dimondstein.

On June 30, the USPS announced its intention to close and consolidate 82 mail processing facilities in 37 states throughout the country beginning in January 2015.

On Aug. 1, the USPS posted a notice in Federal Register announcing that the consolidations will eliminate overnight mail delivery, even within the same town.

Such reckless and counterproductive cuts by USPS have caught the attention of Congress, which has the authority and ability to set USPS on the right path.  So far, 27 senators have signed on to a letter by Senators Tester (D-MT), Sanders (I-VT), and Baldwin (D-WI) to the leaders of the Senate Appropriations Committee urging them to stop these devastating cuts to America’s postal network.  The senators wisely requested that the Committee include language in its appropriations bill to maintain service standards at current levels and prevent any closures or consolidations in 2015.

While these 27 senators got the ball rolling, they need our help!  To ensure the Senate Appropriations Committee does the right thing and votes to protect speedy mail delivery, our jobs, and our facilities, we are asking all APWU members to reach out to their senators in support of this effort.

Hey senators, eliminate Saturday delivery and the usps wouldn’t have to cut standards and close your beloved plants… Yes senators and congressman it’s your fault because you have not passed postal reform

  • Shuck

Cutting Saturday would not save anything. 1 Billion in operating profit so far this year.

  • Bob

I’m amazed that so many people do not understand what is really going on with the USPS before posting stuff. People do your homework and look up and see what is actually going on. The PO is not losing money it’s the pre funding of the retirees health care to the tune of 5.5 billion dollars a year that the PO is required to pay. If they would stop that the PO would be in the black?
