Florida Letter Carrier Honored After Saving Woman’s Life

OAKLAND PARK, Fla – A South Florida letter carrier is being honored for saving a life.

Mark Gereffi, who has been a letter carrier for more than 30 years, said he was just doing his job when he saw the victim on the ground in front of her Oakland Park home, back in April. “I had pulled around, and I was walking up to the house to deliver the mail,” Gereffi told WSVN, “and there was a lady laying in the front porch.”

Gereffi has delivered mail in Oakland Park for the majority of his time as a postal worker, so over the years he has gotten to know the people on his route. When he saw the vicim in distress and yelling for help he immediately called 911. “I see them all the time, and my first response was, ‘Where is Barry?’ which is her husband, but he happened to be out that day, and there was nobody home.”

The 57-year-old woman was having a stroke. Gereffi stayed with the woman until paramedics arrived and possibly saved her life.

On Wednesday, Gereffi was honored by the National Association of Letter Carriers for his heroic actions. “I just did what anybody would do,” said Gereffi. “I’m just glad I could help.”
