Mail Mystery: More questions after World War II-era envelope opened by recipients’ family member

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – When Nancy Sensabaugh Baker finally opened the World War II-era envelope originally addressed to her grandparents, she found a modern message asking her to email someone.

A tidy happy ending eluded Baker the Friday afternoon before Memorial Day weekend, when the letter arrived at her home.

The Muskegon, Mich. postmaster showed the mystery letter to media last week in hopes of discovering a surviving family member qualified to receive it. The Florida schoolteacher was located by hundreds of volunteer Internet researchers in just a few days.

“It looks like it’s been opened,” Baker told MLive Muskegon Chronicle Friday afternoon, May 23. “The envelope is cool. … I don’t know where the letter is.”
