Fox News gets credit for first phony “Obama’s $4 Billion Taxpayer Bailout” headline

It should come as no surprise that Fox News has the first headline announcing “Obama’s $4 Billion Taxpayer Bailout of the Postal Service”. The page has a short excerpt from, and a link to, this morning’s article from the Daily Caller. If you’ve read that article, you may recall that the author claimed that the proposed aid for the USPS, which does not involve any taxpayer money “has its critics, with some referring to it as a $4 billion taxpayer bailout of the Postal Service”. But the only expert the author actually bothered to interview said “I do not regard what’s specifically in the budget as a bailout,… I do not think that allowing the Postal Service to reschedule its payment for the retiree health benefits fund is a bailout.”

Fox News is apparently not about to let the facts get in the way of a good headline.

  • Rob

It is a bailout. It is an alternative, an additional choice, relieving an emergency situation…..so it is a bailout

  • Billbob

It’s not a bail out when the usps overpaid the government 75 billion and can’t get it back.that a no interest loan to the government.let’s get it right!

  • NICK

I WONDER IF ROB FAVORS THE GOVERNMENT KEEPING THE 75 BILLION IN OVER PAYMENTS FROM THE POSTAL SERVICE?
WITH THAT MONEY THE POSTAL SERVICE WOULD BE MAKING A PROFIT.

  • Mike

Hey Rob, instead of just reading the headline how ’bout reading up on the subject first! The emergency was caused by the billion dollar payments in the first place. Without these payments the USPS is actually making money.

Congress forced this on the post office so they could borrow from the fund, just like they do with Social Security. And just like SS, the money ain’t gonna be there when we need it.

  • brian

Rob says “It is a bailout. It is an alternative, an additional choice, relieving an emergency situation…..so it is a bailout”
    Oh- OK
So if I hack in to your your bank account, take all your money and bankrupt you, but then decide to take pity on you and give you back just enough money to survive on, that’s a bailout?
    Thanks for clearing that up.

  • Labman

Rob Is a Liberal, drinking the left kool aid and eats all the stuff they feed him

  • Rob

Oh the anger. Actually I see both sides, It is obvious the overpayment has led to the situation. The bailout which people familiar with the situation do not call a bailout, is never the less a call to relieve the USPS from making the payments as fast as the 2006 law required. In addition, the USPS gets some credit for the overpayments. In the long run, the problem still exists. It is kicked down the road, which Obama likes to do in the hopes things will be better…..which is doubtful but possible for the USPS.

  • ray

If you knew you were overpaying your mgt. company ,would you continue to pay it?Did the USPS ever try to stop payment? And if it comes to fact that the Government was entitled to it(legally),and they excuse 4.Billion $,Then that is what I would call a bail-out.Stop payment, duh!

  • letter man

Instead of mandating a fixed amount every quarter. Why don’t they just put what profit we make into the retirement funds and then we would come out even everytime. That is if we can keep management and Congress from blowing it first.

  • What do you really know?

No other company in the US is required by law to pre-fund future retire health care. Some do when they make a profit. USPS is required to pay $5.5 Billion dollars (that is 12.5 Billion stamps worth) every year irregardless of profit or loss. The money is supposed to be in trust to pay retiree costs. Guess what, it is not there. Congress takes it and applies it to the deficit. That is why they refuse to change it and they can’t agree to refund the USPS its overpayment. As a US Citizen, I buy stamps to mail letters and get them from point A to point B, not as a new form of tax. And oh by the way, a withdrawal of your own money held in trust is not a bailout.
